SGML stands for Sounds Great, Maybe Later. Well, not really, though it has been called that. It's actually Standard General Markup Language. It's a set of rules for how to tag elements in a document - something often done in XML or HTML, which are descendants of SGML. Like XML, SGML does not specify formatting. The idea is that once you have elements defined, you can then define how to format them depending on where you're sending them: to a printer, to a web page, etc.
