If you're a true Flash master--and we're betting you are--you know that the real power behind the throne in Macromedia's wildly popular Web animation software is its programming language: ActionScript 2.0. Offering a more robust programming model and better object-oriented programming support than ever before, ActionScript 2.0 allows you to take your Flash MX 2004 designs to new levels--if, that is, you know how to make full use of it. This volume, from the folks behind the software, makes sure that you do! In this highly cross-referenced dictionary, you'll find detailed descriptions of every ActionScript operator, keyword, statement, action, property, function, object, component, and method. What's more, an invaluable chart will help you locate definitions for symbolic operators or methods even when you don't know the object or component class. To top it all off, Macromedia has rounded up a posse of Flash and ActionScripting luminaries to contribute articles on a range of topics--from converting ActionScript 1.0 to ActionScript 2.0 to using design patterns in Flash.

Thorough and in depth compared to other Flash Books on AS2/Flash MX 2004:
I have quite a few Flash books starting with Flash 4 and on. This book is an ideal reference and to keep handy when exploring new Actionscript commands and example applications. Yes, much of the book is a print of the Flash MX 2004 Help menu as a few reviewers have mentioned but I always wish I had a complete bound book of the help menu anyway.
I am looking at ActionScript 3.0 books and I don't see anything that compares.
I find many instructional books using larger type and large margins on... more info
Insightful:
The Actionscript Language reference is primarily for the intermediate user already familiar with the flash authoring environment and a little scripting.
It boasts of a comprehensive coverage of all the Classes(their corresponding properties, methods/handlers)arranged in an alphabetical fashion for easy access. Although laden with examples, DON'T confuse this book for a tutorial. You might wanna consider buying Flash 8 ActionScript Bible first, before delving into this code-centric manual. Or better... more info
Invaluable Reference:
There's a built-in ActionScript 2.0 Dictionary in the Flash Help files, and on the Adobe website. And it's more up to date than this. However, there's nothing like having the book right there when you need it. I've designed and scripted two online Flash games (and I'll plug them in just a moment), and this book sat on my desk the entire time. It's basically falling apart at this point, so I might have to order another soon. If you're still looking to learn AS 2.0 (AS 3.0 is great, but it might be a... more info
Great addition to the library:
Review of Actionscript Language Reference for Macromedia Flash 8 Introduction: Actionscript Language Reference for Macromedia Flash 8 from Macromedia Press and Rew Riders is a "thick book" that every Flash Designer or Developer should have sitting next to the keyboard. But don't let the words "Macromedia Flash" fool you into thinking this book is about animation or designing in Flash. This is a no nonsense dictionary-style resource that provides a ton of information about the powerful scripting... more info
