"The Strunk & White of academic writing."--Richard Bullock, Wright State University As employers, politicians, parents, and other citizens lament the decline of writing skills among Americans, this little book comes to the rescue. An instant bestseller when it first appeared as a college textbook, They Say/I Say gives writers precisely what they need to know in the all-important domain of persuasive writing. Cutting through the clutter of educational diagnoses and nostrums, it goes right to the heart of what writers most need to do, and that is to listen to what others are saying (they say), summarize it, and then offer their own argument (I say) as a response. Offering user-friendly templates to help writers make these key moves in their own writing, They Say/I Say is already being called the Strunk & White of persuasive writing.

Decent, if you like writing....:
I bought this book for my English class, but have never actually read it. Does have some good stories and writing tips, but not actually useful. Okay if you're a writer. Buy the St. Martin's handbook....way more useful.
A must have for anyone who needs to write an effective essay!:
This simply stated reference book gives details in concise writing techniques that I used from the first time I opened the book! My collegiate career would have been easier if I'd had this before I became a senior - what an awesome find - recommended by a peer.
Great Resource:
I am in the process of writing my dissertation and this book has been a great help in improving both the flow of my argument and the style of my writing. Simple measures to avoid using redundant phrases such as, "According to___________" which get boring after awhile. I highly reccomend it to writers at all levels.
ON TARGET:
I was amazed seeing this book. It gets to the heart of making sharp, well-supported essays. No fooling around. If my students would make these moves, they'd be way out in front. As teachers, our only challenge is finding ways to have students practice these techniques.
[P.S. - my book (noted) shows effective forms for quoting in its final essay.]
