Great book at a great value!:

This book breaks down each literary agency with great detail. This allows the reader an avenue to select an agent that best fits their type or genre of work. My only advice is to double check the addresses on the internet BEFORE sending a query letter! This is the 2003 edition and some agencies have new addresses and agents.

Still a Winner:

When I marketed work for Writers' Showplace I always used Jeff Herman's book as a reference. Now that Writers' Showplace has closed its door I've opened another business, The Writer's Guide.Com and I still have Mr. Herman's book close at hand.

On the other hand:

This is a huge and expensive book. It's also, for my purposes, terribly out of date. Several of the agents I've contacted have moved or are longer in the business. It has some very good features such as the advice section but I could've gotten the same advice for free from the internet. As other reviewers have noted there is an easier and cheaper way to get writing information. Pick up a book that is similar to the stuff that you write. Go to the dedication or thanks page and read it. Many authors thanks... more info

Overflowing with information!:

The Writer's Guide to Book Editor's, Publishers, and Literary Agents, 2002-2003 is the best REFERENCE BOOK available for new and experienced writers. This book is overflowing with information - it includes everything you will need to connect yourself with the top editors and agents in the industry. Purchasing this book is a must for anyone serious about his or her writing career.

from Penguin

Customer Review:
So I got this book because of the movie. I struggled to read it. The author goes into tooooo much detail about things and it just drags on. She also writes the book for higher level readers which turns me off since there is toooo much detail

Price: $21.99

Customer Review:
As an academician, I do a lot of research work. This book has made it very easy for me to do the proper referencing in my research papers. On top of this, I like the details on research writing such as 'How to express ideas and reducing bias in language'. As English is not my first language, this... more info

3. Sharp Writing: Building Better Writing Skills Sharp Writing: Building Better Writing Skills
from Kaplan Test Prep

Customer Review:
Kaplan's "Sharp Writing" is a practical overview of grammar and usage, but is quite basic. If you are looking for a book that will provide you with more "Style" advice than grammar, I would recommend Style: Toward Clarity and Grace (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing). I would... more info

4. They Say I Say : The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing (Second Edition) "They Say / I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing (Second Edition)
from W. W. Norton & Company
Price: $16.71

Customer Review:
The book is generally poorly written. It is extremely colloquial, and thus could be of use for teaching younger students. However, for an educated audience (college level), it is extremely weak and close to useless. I was assigned this book for an introductory writing course at my college and was... more info

Had Twain stopped after the first section, in which he describes riverboat piloting and his exploits therein, I would have come away with a positive impression of the book. His piloting writings were entertaining and interesting, even though not particularly relevant in today's world.

8. Northanger Abbey (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Jane Austen) Northanger Abbey (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Jane Austen)
from Cambridge University Press
Price: $83.99

Customer Review:
Jane Austen's first completed novel is lighter and more humorous in tone than her subsequent work. It is however, as beautifully written as that later work - there was, as always with Austen, a lot of rewriting before publication, which in this case was posthumous - and it is in no sense an inferior... more info

My daughter had to read this book over the summer for a grade in her Honors English class. I liked the fact that it was cheap, but on the other hand, what I paid for shipping I could have went ahead and purchased it out of the store. I wasn't to thrilled about that!

Amazon has started lumping together all of the reviews for the various versions of a title, even if the review doesn't pertain to that particular version. Research is most definitely a craft and as with all research books, there is a great deal written about scientific research and medical research. Generic research guides do little to offer help to Musicological research. Yet this is a helpful resource tool if taken generically.
