Outside the box...this is not your typical text book. Carol covers all forms of poem but is always pushing beyond the rules. Understand the rules so you can break them or at lease work beyond them. She uses lots of "fire starters" to kick start you in the right direction during each exercise. I am a beginner at this, picking up where I left off 20 years ago. But the writing is to both the teenager and the adult in me. I feel a lean in this book to do better but not the "you have to do this and get an A".... more info

This is one of the greatest books I have used as a reference guide for teaching poetry. In the past 8 years I've used it to help non-native English speakers write poetry; I've used sections of it to teach educators how to teach poetry. Great to use as a whole or in chapters, especially for people who might feel intimidated putting pen to paper.
