Book Description Finalist-USA BookNews' Best Books of 2007 Writer's Digest Book Club selection
Although The Writer Within You was originally written to respond to repeated requests by Retirees-both Seniors and Baby Boomers-who long to become published authors, growing numbers of younger writers and wanna-bes have found the book very helpful. Many novices have repeatedly requested a simplified, comprehensive, single-volume guidebook to lead them through the confusing publishing process from initial planning to final success. The book teaches readers the basics of crafting a book or articles and simplifies the challenge of selecting the best method of publishing, marketing, and promoting their work. It is divided into sections. "Writing Your Book" includes instruction in crafting a novel, memoir, or how-to. A separate section devoted to freelancing articles covers researching ideas, writing and placement in periodicals. The primary methods of book publishing are explained to help readers choose what best suits their needs. The "Marketing and Promotion" section leads the reader through these processes from advance review copies through branding, signings, press contacts, and the use of the Internet. Several chapters are devoted to an extensive look into writing and promoting on the Web. Readers are given guidelines for researching, editing, rewriting, and organizing an office and business. An extensive Appendix provides tested resources for authors. Toned boxes labeled "Words of Wisdom" are sprinkled throughout the book with quotations and advice from recognized authors, literary agents, publishers, and academics.

An adequate overview, but not really focused on seniors:
The author states that the goal of this book is to provide guidance for the most common types of writing projects that are of interest to seniors. The book does an adequate job of providing that overview and pointing readers to useful sources for more information. But much of the detailed content in this book is a rehash of generic guidelines for anyone wants to write a book or magazine articles. I was disappointed that the book did not address issues older writers must face, such as being perceived as... more info
Excellent! Glad I ordered this!:
This is a book of "how to" that speaks to me. I don't have to look up terms used in the book as the author has a genuine way of expressing his point(s) to the layperson to make it easily understood. I have enjoyed the read and plan on using it to my benefit!
A Book that Gives One Confidence As Well As Nuts and Bolts:
I love this book. For the retired person who wants to become an author, it's hard to imagine either a more knowledgeable or a more encouraging companion than Charles Jacobs. He cheers on the older would-be writer with his warm tone and his reminders of the actual advantages that age brings with it to the writing task. He draws on a lifetime of experience in publishing to pack his book with practical advice on all phases of the writing process, from coming up with a good idea for an article or book to... more info
Begin A New Career as a Writer?:
In "The Writer Within You," Charles Jacobs provides a basic guide to writing and publishing anything from a novel, memoir, or nonfiction book to magazine articles, travel stories, or business writing. His target audience seems to be the educated, entrepreneurial retiree eager to start a new career as a writer. This book covers a lot of territory in its 300-plus pages, with an index and an appendix of sources for more in-depth information. It covers the writing process, the various ways to publish, and... more info
