think of the programs as experiments:
The book is directed at a researcher, who might be an undergrad or graduate student in the social sciences. Who has never designed and run an experiment. So the topics that need to be understood are explained. Like simple statistical analysis. This particular discussion is indeed very brief. The reader who needs help with this should consult other books that have more extensive discussions. Other topics are covered in more detail by Kettner.
