Highly recommended:
If I could go back in time to when I first started my academic career, I'd bring this book with me. Trust me, Sternberg (the eminent psychologist) is on target. He provides benevolent, sensible advice and takes the high road. If you follow his advice, your career and life will shine with integrity, value and productivity.
Useful for new academics:
Contrary to the first reviewer, I found the book helpful, inspiring, and filled with useful suggestions for new academics. Sure it's a bit hackneyed ("Be true to yourself and others"), but a lot of the suggestions are worthwhile for those who may not be as familiar with all variations of academic culture. I found it comforting in my quite insecure first year as an asst. prof., and now three years later I've gone online to buy it for our new hire. Psychological Phluff:
If a train filled with overused cliches leaves Yale University in New Haven, CT, at the same time that a train filled with cheap advice leaves the American Psychological Association in Washington, DC, where will these trains meet? The answer: right in the middle of Psychology 101 1/2: The Unspoken Rules for Success in Academia.
