Another great collection of Bellow's works. Hope the Library of America comes out with the next volume sooner than a year.
A beautiful edition of three powerful works by an American master:
These are three very fine, even great, novels. Of course, one doesn't simply dash through Bellow. Each page requires and rewards close reading. While Bellow has been criticized for putting some things in his novels to show off his vast erudition, I found those details interesting and that they contributed to an understanding of the characters in each story. One is the remarkable short novel, 'Seize the Day' the second is his African adventure the wildly comic 'Henderson' the third , his arguably best book, 'Herzog'. Herzog is his great meditation on history and civlization as he traces five - days in the life of Moses Herzog, a former university teacher, a historian, who is struggling to survive in the wake of his divorce from his second wife.
