I found this little book to be very helpful. It covered what should and shouldn't be done and the cliche's to avoid like the plague.

A Discouraging Book:

I was severly disappointed in 'An Introduction to Christian Writing: An Indepth Companion to the Complete Writing Experience' by Ethel Herr. Oddly enough for someone who is supposed to have a Christian viewpoint, Ms. Herr seems to totally discount inspiration of any kind for a writer. Perhaps that's why I found her writing to be uninspired and uninspiring. She insisted writers use a cycle of endless writing and rewriting. As a novice writer this has been an invaluable resource. For the person that wants to improve technique in a practical way, Ms. Herr has included assignments to complet to use the skills that she discusses. Very worth while the time and effort to read and complete.
