The ink works well,
of course dries up a little faster than blue ink (as with all black inks), but it writes well.
Especially the form of the bottle is useful for filling.
Great ink for the cost.:
I'm still not sure if it's the ink or the pen, but in 6 years of using this combination heavily every day, I have not had the pen skip or dry a single time. Previous lower quality pens such as parker had continual "dry nib" problems, but never the Montblanc. The shape of this ink well makes it very easy to use all of the ink rather then just the first 2/3 of the bottle. As posted earlier, this ink is certainly NOT waterproof. In fact, almost breathing on the dry ink may cause it to smear.... more info
Buy it for the bottle:
Everyone has their own favorite ink, but most bottles make it difficult to get the last half out of the bottle and into your pen (or the last 2/3, if your pen has a particularly large nib!). The Montblanc "shoe" has a separate filling chamber that makes it easy to get every last drop of ink into your pen. Buy it for the bottle.
don't skimp:
Don't skimp on quality when it comes to socks, ties, and ink. As a recent immigrant to the world of fountain pens, I've enjoyed learning to write with two new Cross instruments. I started off with Cross ink refills that fit inside the pen, but have since discovered the joy of dipping.
