XML is eXtensible markup language, meaning a language you can extend, or define, to describe various categories of data elements. In our context as writers, it's most often used in defining parts of documents (e.g. chapter, section, paragraph, graphic, etc.), but XML is now very much a part of several technology-based industries, including banks, which use XML to exchange data with each other.
